Summer League Cups (2023/24) – Round 1

As the league seasons draw to a close, the spotlight shifts to the cup competitions.

The structure for both Division 1 and Division 2 cups is identical, featuring three groups. Two of these groups consist of four teams each, and one comprises three teams. Teams compete in both home and away matches. The group winners and the best-performing runner-up across all groups advance to the semifinals.

In the opening round of Group A for Division 1, Global extended their league dominance with a 4-2 victory over Sundowners 2. Meanwhile, Highlands A beat Joburg Atletico with a 6-2 scoreline. Over in Group B, Panorama faced difficulties fielding a complete team, resulting in a 3-0 forfeit to Joburg City. Sundowners set a strong start with a 5-0 thrashing of Olympia. In Group C, Randburg kicked off their campaign with a solid 4-2 win against Barcelona.

Turning our attention to Division 2, Group A saw GMPI securing a 3-1 win against Florida, while Highlands Park B outscored Old Parks 2 in a high-scoring 6-3 game. The so-called ‘group of death’, brimming with the top four teams from this season’s Division 2, witnessed Lenasia dispatching Randfontein 4-1, and Old Parks narrowly edging out Warriors 3-2. In Group C, Fling Eagles clinched a narrow 4-3 victory over Olympia 2.

These opening matches set the stage for what promises to be an exhilarating continuation of cup battles, with teams eager to etch their names into the annals of their respective competitions.

The cups will start the 8th of May. Winner of each group qualifies to semifinals, plus the best second based on points average (not total points due to one group having 3 teams) and avg goal ratio.

Summer Season Leagues Overview

In Division 1, Global FC clinched their second league title, showcasing dominance from the season’s outset and securing a perfect record of 16 wins in 16 games. This remarkable achievement underscores their superiority in the league this year. Unfortunately, Panorama FC and Joburg Atletico couldn’t escape the relegation zone and will find themselves in Division 2 next summer.

Turning to Division 2, Lenasia celebrated their first league title, finishing three points clear of Old Parks 1. Both teams performed exceptionally well throughout the season, earning them automatic promotions to Division 1 for the next Summer League. Florida Albion and Flying Eagles finished at the bottom of the standings.

Summer League 2023/24: 18th round results

The curtain falls on the regular season in Divisions 1 and 2, setting the stage for the upcoming cup competitions, which kick off on the 8th of May.

In Division 1, Global FC maintained their impeccable season, securing a 3-0 victory over Randburg to preserve their flawless record. Meanwhile, Joburg City handed a 4-1 defeat to Atletico and Panorama fell 1-3 to Sundowners in an away match.

Over in Division 2, the newly crowned champions, Lenasia, settled for a thrilling 3-3 draw against Flying Eagles. In a high-scoring affair, GPMI edged out Warriors in a tight 5-4 victory. In other matches, Rush defeated Old Parks 2 with a solid 3-1 scoreline, while Randfontein beat Florida, securing a 2-0 win on the road.

Old Parks suffered a crucial home defeat to Rush, paving the way for Lenasia to secure the Division 2 championship. With 34 points from 14 matches, Lenasia clinched the title, leaving Old Parks to settle for second place, finishing just one point behind after completing all their fixtures.

Summer League 2023/24: 17th round results

As the league season nears its conclusion, Division 1 witnessed a 4-4 draw between Leeds and Sundowners. Meanwhile, Randburg secured a 3-1 victory over Panorama, and Highlands Park A narrowly edged out Joburg City 5-4. In another fixture, Global was handed a 3-0 default win against Atletico.

Global has already clinched the championship, but the relegation battle remains intense. Leeds is precariously placed with 11 points from 14 matches, just above Panorama, who has 10 points from 15 games. Atletico is at the greatest risk, with 8 points from 14 games, and only one match remaining to salvage their season.

In Division 2, Old Parks suffered a disappointing 5-3 home defeat to Rush, ending their title aspirations and paving the way for Lenasia to claim the Division 2 crown. In other action, Randfontein outpaced Warriors 4-2, while Florida secured a clean 2-0 win against Old Parks. The scheduled match between GPMI and Flying Eagles was forfeited, awarding GPMI the victory.

In a triumphant culmination of an unbeatable season, Global United has clinched the Division 1 league title, showcasing a remarkable performance by winning all 14 games.

This victory not only underscores their dominance in the current season but also adds to their impressive trophy cabinet, including the Winter Season Cup of 2023 and the Summer League championship of 2022/2023.

Summer League 2023/24: 16th round results

Global United has once again underscored their supremacy in Division 1, clinching their 14th consecutive victory and securing the league title following their triumphant summer league campaign. Their latest triumph came at the expense of Joburg City, edging them out with a 3-2 victory.

The competition remains fierce with numerous catch-up matches yet to play, where double points have been awarded in three of the last four games. Notably, Sundowners FC 2 overcame Sundowners with a 3-2 scoreline, while Ranburg succumbed to Highlands in a high-scoring 6-5 defeat.

In a turn of fortunes at the bottom of the table, Leeds’ 3-1 victory over Panorama propelled them to 8th place, overtaking Atletico who now finds themselves languishing at the bottom.

Switching our focus to Division 2, the landscape of the competition has intensified. Old Parks clinched a crucial 3-2 win against Lenasia in Monday night’s showdown, narrowing the gap to the summit to just one point, albeit having played an extra game.
The battle for supremacy saw Warriors securing a 3-2 victory over Florida, while Old Parks 2 dramatically closed in on Randfontein following a decisive 6-3 win against GPMI in a pivotal six-pointer match. Meanwhile, Rush and Flying Eagles were locked in a 1-1 stalemate, each taking home a single point from the encounter.

Summer League 2023/24: 15th round results

As the season nears its climax, the battle for supremacy intensified under the relentless downpour of a particularly soggy evening. Here’s how the drama unfolded across the divisions:

In Division 1, the showdown between Joburg City and Sundowners 2 culminated in a 2-2 stalemate. Meanwhile, Global secured a 4-1 victory against Highlands Park. Due to the 6 pointers rule, now they just need 2 points to win the league.

In another closely contested match, Panorama and Joburg Atletico found themselves evenly matched, each securing a goal to end the game at 1-1. Sundowners stayed in second after a 4-3 win against Randburg

Division 2 was not short of excitement either. Old Parks beat Florida 7-2. Yet, it was Lenasia who maintained their position at the pinnacle, overcoming GPMI with a 3-1 win.

Summer League 2023/24 : catch-up results

In Division 1, Global beat Sundowners 3-2, closing up on the Division 1 title, thanks to a 5 points lead (with 2 games in hand) and with only 6 games left (4 for Sundowners)

In Division 2, Flying Eagles and Florida shared the points with 1-1 result.
